Last July 16, the ADE team performed a preliminary robotic test campaign at GMV facilities in Tres Cantos, Madrid.

ADE will prove in analogues environments two different use cases: a planetary sample catching rover and a terrestrial rover.

The goals of the performed tests were to validate ADE in a scenario representative of a nuclear power plant under decommissioning. More specifically, goal of those preliminary tests were:

Take images for the SD

Check correct DEM construction

Verify correct Guidance and Hazard Avoidance as well as DEM map

Get images from the rover’s arm camera to validate radiation measurements

Radiation is simulated using cardboards and levels of red in the images

The platform used to perform the above mentioned tests was the GMV’s Foxizirc rover. The rover was equipped with a Stereo cameras, an IMU, an UltraScale, PTU and NUC.

The rover was equipped with a HRES camera, a LIDAR, an IMU, a robotic arm equipped with a camera on the end effector, and a NUC computer, that applies AI techniques to identify patterns on the images. A separate On-board computer contains the guidance, navigation and control components, as well as the software for perception and localization.

Around 1000 images collected during the test with the High resolution camera

The test showed a very good performances of the entire systems, including rover platform, avionics and software and operations.

The next step for ADE project will be test the avionics for the Martian use case using the DFKI’s SHERPA TT rover. Those tests will be performed at DFKI’s facilities in Bremen, at the end of July.

Last May 18, ADE project held the Critical Design Review (CDR) to set out detailed designs, review current project status, and the status of the SW under development, as well as the prototypes, via videoconference.
The goal for the ADE CDR was to review the work performed during the last phase of the project, the final design document as well as the final definition of the test scenarios.
During the review, each partner provided its presentation and the main topics were the integration of the rover ADE avionics in the rover system as well as ADE overall design, including the ground system, the simulator, the ground truth system, and the so-called ADAM system, that includes systems for localization and perception, rover guidance, mobile manipulation, locomotion harness, FDIR tools, onboard planning and scheduling, and sensors that use OG4 interface.
During the meeting, reviewers agreed on the completeness and the high degree of detail of the documents provided. There was a common consensus on the difficulties to be faced, but also of the clear advances concerning the previous milestone (PDR) that was held in November 2019.
The meeting was attended by partners from the consortium, plus the European Commission’s technical officer and PSA representatives for assessment of the final result, a resounding success in all cases.

The project thus crosses its equator and embarks on the next phase, which will see the start of implementation and integration of all developed technology, that will be performed till the TRR event, in which the system will be ready for the field tests.

On November 12, it was held the Preliminary Design Review at GMV facilities, in Madrid.

GMV coordinated the meeting with the presence of PSA members, the European Commission, and consortium members.

The objective of the PDR is to consolidate the requirements and design of the software and to authorize the start of the detailed design and implementation phase.

This milestone ends the Preliminary Design and Modelling Phase, where the common architecture of the ADE system was agreed and the team has presented the ADE demonstration scenario and identified the test facilities, as well as the equipment and components necessary.

Last June 12, the ADE System Requirement Review took place in Madrid, at GMV premises.

This meeting closed the Technology Review and System Requirements phase. During the meeting the main outcomes of this phase – the System Requirements Document and the Technology Development Plan – were discussed with the EC-REA/PSA and ADE’s Advisory Board. In particular, progress and relevant feedback have been achieved with respect to ADE’s objectives and main system requirements, ADE’s demonstrator scenario requirements, and ADE’s technology design and enhancements. These results provide a strong foundation for the upcoming phase of ADE, i.e., preliminary design of demonstrator and technologies.

At the same time, this meeting provided the ground for a project interim review assessing the progress with regard to Milestone 8 – Verification of measurable and ambitious targets. The advancement presented in this meeting, supported by the strong experience of the Advisory Board, led to a rewarding interim review.

The meeting was declared successful, with the next phase of ADE set to start during June.

The 2nd and 3rd April, 2019, the 3rd PERASPERA workshop “Plan the European Roadmap and its Activities for Space Exploitation of Robotics and Autonomy“ was held at BOZAR, the Palais des Beaux-Arts, in Brussels (Belgium).

The workshop was organized as a consultation event bringing together members of the institutions, industry and academy to discuss the next phase of the Space Robotics Technology roadmap, the preparation of the space robotics activities in the next Horizon Europe frame-program, and the future of the on-orbit servicing activities at European level.

During the first day of the workshop, the members of the Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) on Space Robotics Technologies presented the results of the activities of the first call (2016-2019) call, and the status and perspectives of the projects recently launched within the second call (2019-2021).

GMV presented the ADE project, detailing the project plans, technical objectives and current status, in two separate sessions. The first one was a closed session for coordination among the SRC members, and the second was an open session in which the objectives of the project were presented to a wide audience of stakeholders from industry, academia and European institutions.

The representatives of GMV also participated in several discussion panels on the exploitation and impact of the SRC products and the potential for AI in future space robotics activities.

The outcome of this 3rd PERASPERA will shape the next stages of the roadmap for space robotics in Europe, which shall combine the heritage of the developments from the SRC, the short and long term perspectives for on-orbit and planetary robotic operations, and the synergies with terrestrial robotics innovations and developments.
